Getting started

The Veterinarian-Client Patient Relationship

What is this?  Why do I need a yearly exam?

First and foremost, it's required by law in many states –

A Veterinarian-Client Patient relationship or VCPN exists when the veterinarian has been allowed to fully examine your pet and use their background, knowledge and experience to properly diagnose and manage the animal's well being.  A separate VCPN must exist for each individual pet as the veterinarian must have determined their health and medical needs, for that specific pet, and this must be done IN PERSON.  It cannot be established over the phone, email, or social media, however, once established it can be maintained this way as your vet deems fit.  Recent updated yearly exams are lawfully required in order for a veterinarian to diagnose or treat your animal, prescribe or dispense medications,

Two, it's the best thing for your animal's health. Your veterinarian should be familiar with your animal's medical history and keep a written record of your animal's health so they can provide your animal with the best possible care. The AVMA's Principles of Veterinary Medical Ethics also requires a VCPR for a veterinarian to prescribe medication or otherwise treat an animal.
